Lakesha Womack, the Democratic challenger for North Carolina’s 14th Congressional District, was served with a felony arrest warrant on Oct. 11 during a campaign event.

Polk County Sheriff’s deputies executed the warrant, which originated in 2020. The document charged Womack, 49, with failing to return a hired motor vehicle valued at more than $4,000.

Records show the alleged vehicle was a 2019 Toyota Corolla rented from Budget Car Rental in October 2019. The car was reported to be worth $20,000 at the time. Although the criminal summons was issued in January 2020, authorities did not serve the warrant until this month. Officials have not yet explained the delay.

Womack is competing against Republican incumbent Rep. Tim Moore in a district that includes Gastonia, Shelby, and Morgantown. Her campaign did not directly answer questions about the felony warrant. Instead, it responded to recent attack ads from Moore’s group, Friends of Tim Moore.

“Over the past few weeks, allegations involving me have drawn significant media attention and attack ads from Friends of Tim Moore,” a campaign statement said. “Candidates for public office should be held accountable and voters deserve transparency.”

The statement added that Womack has emphasized accountability and affordability. It noted that every candidate should be evaluated by consistent standards, including their record of public service and responsiveness to constituents. The midterm general election is scheduled for Nov. 3.
