General Mills is putting Ziploc closures on its cereal packaging to stop food from spilling out of open boxes. The company announced the partnership on Wednesday. The change applies to Cheerios and other General Mills cereal products. The new closures will appear on both bag and box formats. Consumers can keep the cereal fresh after the initial opening. The zip mechanism is similar to the seals found on chip and snack bags.

The collaboration brings together two major household brands. Ziploc is a division of SC Johnson. General Mills owns the Cheerios trademark. The two companies worked to integrate the zip technology into standard cereal packaging. The goal is to reduce waste and improve convenience for daily use. The feature allows users to close the package securely after each serving.

The rollout is scheduled for 2027. General Mills did not provide a specific launch date for the new packaging. The company stated that the transition will happen gradually. Existing products will continue to ship with traditional seals until the new inventory arrives. The zip closures will be available in stores nationwide. The company expects the change to benefit families who store cereal on counters.

Packaging changes like this often face manufacturing adjustments. The new boxes and bags require updated printing and sealing processes. Ziploc technology has been used in food storage for decades. This marks its first major expansion into ready-to-eat breakfast packaging. The partnership aims to leverage existing consumer recognition of the Ziploc seal.
