The Gators secured their second regional title in three years by outlasting their crosstown rivals in a tense match on Thursday night in Woodstock. Second-seeded Crystal Lake South defeated third-seeded Crystal Lake Central 25-23 and 28-26 to win the Class 3A Woodstock North Regional championship. The victory caps a year in which the Gators went 3-0 against the Tigers, but it was the closest contest of the season.

South and Central have played three times this year, with the Gators winning each matchup. Coach Jorie Fontana noted the difficulty of facing a familiar opponent for the third time. "It's the worst, and it's the worst when it's someone like Central, because they've got some phenomenal hitters," Fontana said. She added that Central possesses the tenacity to refuse to let down, a trait evident in Thursday's performance.

The Tigers, who started the season with nine straight losses, fought back from a significant deficit in the first set. Central trailed by as many as six points before sophomores Katie Piech and Haley Busse cut the margin late in the set. The Gators held on to take the opener, largely thanks to junior Sahara Okirika, who recorded four of her seven kills and both of her blocks in that set.

The second set remained tight through the late stages. Central missed two set points at 25-24 and 26-25. Senior outside hitter Bobbi Wire tied the score at 25 with a kill and served the final two points to force an overtime point. South senior Logan Georgy won the match with a back-row kill that was tipped at the net. Senior setter Peyton Ziegler, who finished with 22 assists, set up the final point.

Central coach Amy Johnson praised her team's resilience after a difficult start to the season. "Starting 0-9 was quite the gut check for them," Johnson said. She emphasized that the team trusted the process to peak in late October. The Tigers finished with 10 aces and four service errors, led by Jordyn Johnson and Busse, who had four kills each.

South senior libero Layla Addison made two diving digs on the final point. "We all just played for each other," Addison said. "We just wanted to prove that everything we worked for throughout the season was real and for this moment." The Gators improved to 24-11 on the season.

The Gators will host fourth-seeded Kaneland in a Crystal Lake Sectional semifinal at 7 p.m. Tuesday. Kaneland won its regional title in Plano, defeating top-seeded Sterling 25-22, 19-25, and 25-19. South has not won a sectional title since 2017.
