A 10-year-old child died Friday night in Murfreesboro after being struck by a vehicle. The collision happened on Middle Tennessee Boulevard between Southeast Broad Street and Bradyville Pike at approximately 9:40 p.m.

First responders transported the child to a hospital, where the child later died. Murfreesboro police confirmed the death in an update issued Saturday morning.

The department's Fatal Accident Crash Team is currently investigating the incident. Officials stated they will not release additional details at this time.

The timing of the crash coincides with the Halloween holiday, a period when pedestrian activity increases. AAA data indicates that children are more than twice as likely to be killed by a vehicle on Halloween than on any other day of the year.

Local law enforcement agencies issued safety reminders for drivers and pedestrians in the days leading up to the holiday. Cpl. Taylor Rosenthal of the Mt. Juliet Police Department noted that children may not be fully attentive. He urged drivers to avoid distractions, maintain slow speeds, and obey posted speed limits.

Authorities advised trick-or-treaters to wear reflective clothing or costumes and carry flashlights. They recommended staying on well-lit sidewalks and having an adult accompany young children. Officials also suggested choosing face paint over vision-blocking masks and inspecting all candy before consumption.
