Putnam County volleyball defeated Earlville in straight sets on Tuesday.
The Panthers won 25-16 and 25-11 on Al Stegman Court to advance to the Class 1A Serena Regional semifinal. This was their second straight victory over the Red Raiders. Putnam County had beaten Earlville in straight sets just one week prior.
The Panthers established early control in the first set. Avery Grasser served an ace to push the lead to 10-3. Kennedy Holocker added another ace to extend the advantage to 14-6. Earlville fought back briefly as Addie Scherer recorded three kills to close the gap to 20-13. Myah Richardson and Britney Trinidad secured the set with a combined ace and kill, along with two kills from Trinidad.
The second set followed a similar pattern. Consecutive kills by Trinidad put Putnam County up 15-5. The Red Raiders narrowed the deficit to seven points, but a rally by Chloe Parcher, Emberlyn Cwikla, Trinidad, and Richardson pushed the score to 21-8. Holocker finished the match with a kill on match point.
Myah Richardson led the Panthers with 11 kills, 12 assists, five digs, two aces, and one block. Trinidad contributed seven kills, 10 assists, and seven digs. Holocker recorded three kills and 13 digs. Grasser served four aces and recorded two kills. Sarah Wiesbrock played libero with 15 digs and three assists. For Earlville, Jacey Helgesen led the team with four kills. Liz Vazquez recorded 11 digs and Payton Actis had six assists.
Coach Amy Bell credited her team's aggressive serving and improved court coverage compared to their previous meeting. "I think the biggest keys for us tonight were that we served aggressively and did a much better job of covering the court than we did last week against them," Bell said. She noted that strong defense allowed the team to run their offense and hit open spots.
Earlville coach Tonya Scherer said her team struggled to slow down the Panthers' attacks. "We knew we were going to need to block or at least get our hands on the ball and slow it down. We weren’t really able to do that tonight," Scherer said. She added that serve receive issues limited Earlville's ability to run an effective offense.
Putnam County, now 20-9-4 for the season, plays the host Serena Huskers, the No. 3 seed, at 7 p.m. on Wednesday. The teams met on Sept. 21, when Serena won in three close sets. Earlville finished the regular season at 15-17.
