Jordanian security forces detained three men on Monday morning in Karak governorate. The arrests followed a fatal attack on a Greek Orthodox church that occurred on Friday.
Public Security Directorate officials reported the capture happened at dawn. All three suspects were wounded during the operation. No police officers were injured. Karak is located south of the capital Amman and has a small Christian population.
The initial attack took place in the village of Hammoud. Gunmen opened fire while a funeral service was underway inside the church. Three individuals were identified as the perpetrators. No group has claimed responsibility for the violence.
Mazen Al-Faraya, the Interior Minister, confirmed the arrests to the state broadcaster Al-Mamlaka. He stated that security services captured the men responsible for the terrorist act. Al-Faraya noted that the suspects resisted fiercely but were subdued and hospitalized with severe injuries. He said the men were identified early in the investigation.
The Public Security Directorate described the event as a terrorist act. The directorate stated that terrorism has no place in the country. Reuters reported that officials did not name the suspects or link them to specific Islamist militant groups.
King Abdullah II directed authorities to use an iron fist against the attackers. He labeled them outlaws of Islam and urged action against anyone undermining national unity.
