One infant died at a Chicago elementary school on Wednesday afternoon after a 15-year-old student gave birth inside the building, police said.
The birth occurred at approximately 3 p.m. in the 600 block of East 131st Street, the address of Aldridge Elementary School in the Riverdale neighborhood. The Cook County medical examiner’s office confirmed that officers pronounced the child dead on the scene. The mother was transported to Comer Children’s Hospital in good condition.
Chicago Public Schools did not provide an immediate response to requests for comment Wednesday night. The school’s exterior LED sign displayed standard messages regarding homecoming week and early dismissal the day before Halloween. By 7:30 p.m., three squad cars were parked outside the campus while uniformed officers moved through the interior.
Calumet Area detectives are currently leading the investigation. No further details regarding the child’s condition prior to the birth were released by authorities.
An autopsy is scheduled for Thursday to determine the cause of death. The investigation remains active as officials review the circumstances of the birth and subsequent death at the Far South Side location.
