A $965 Billion Valuation: The Windfall for Anthropic Backers
Early investors in the AI giant are sitting on massive unrealized gains, with some stakes valued in the billions of dollars ahead of a potential public listing.

For the general public, the upcoming public listing of Anthropic remains a distant event. However, for a select group of venture capitalists and early backers, the financial stakes are already tangible and immense. Even before the company hits the stock market, the private market valuation of $965 billion has transformed early investments into holdings worth billions of dollars. This wealth is not speculative; it is based on the company's current private pricing, which serves as a baseline for the expected IPO valuation of up to $2 trillion later this year.
The path to these valuations has been rapid. In 2021, the startup was valued at just $461 million. By 2023, during the Series C round, that figure had climbed to $5 billion. The trajectory accelerated sharply in the following year. By last year, the company was valued at $183 billion, and by earlier this year, the valuation had reached $380 billion. This exponential growth has created significant disparities in the returns for investors who entered at different stages.
Eric Schmidt, the former Google CEO, exemplifies the reward for early entry. He participated in the 2021 Series A when the company was worth less than half a billion dollars. Today, his approximately 1% stake is valued at nearly $10 billion. Similarly, Spark Capital, the only VC firm known to hold a board seat, invested $75 million in the 2023 Series C. That position has grown more than ninetyfold to a value of $7 billion, a return that dwarfs many traditional investment benchmarks.
Later-stage investors have also reaped substantial profits, though their entry points were significantly higher. Iconiq wrote a $6 billion check last year when the valuation was $183 billion. That investment is now worth $17 billion. Menlo Ventures, which led the Series D and has invested over $1 billion in total, holds a stake currently valued at $14 billion. Even Sequoia, which entered as late as earlier this year at a $380 billion valuation, has already more than doubled its $3 billion investment, securing about 1% ownership.
Sound Ventures, launched by Guy Oseary and actor Ashton Kutcher, also secured a significant position. The firm invested $35 million in the 2023 Series C and added another $400 million subsequently. Their stake is now worth billions, although Kutcher left the firm this year to start a new venture. These figures suggest that the wealth distribution among Anthropic's backers is already substantial, regardless of the final IPO price.
The next phase of this financial story is the public listing, which is expected to occur this year. If the company achieves the anticipated valuation of as much as $2 trillion, the stakes held by these investors could double or grow further. For now, the $965 billion private valuation stands as the concrete benchmark for these gains, highlighting just how much value has been created since the company's early days. The market is watching closely to see if the public listing will cement these gains or adjust them upward.
As the IPO approaches, the focus will shift from private valuations to public trading prices. The figures cited here are based on the latest private round, but the final outcome will depend on market sentiment at the time of the listing. For the backers named, the journey from single-digit millions to multi-billion dollar stakes has been swift, reflecting the broader boom in artificial intelligence investments. The coming months will reveal whether this valuation holds firm or expands further in the public arena.
