A Joliet man stands accused of using his vehicle as a weapon to strike a private security guard during an incident at a local sports bar in August.
Will County prosecutors filed three counts of aggravated assault against Roiber Hernandez-Lira, 27. The charges stem from an Aug. 8 incident at the Mil Amores Sports Bar located at 1527 N. Raynor St. Court records state that Hernandez-Lira operated a light blue Hyundai in a way that left the victim in reasonable apprehension of being struck.
The second count alleges the driver knew the person he attempted to run over was a private security officer. Prosecutors claim the assault occurred in retaliation for the guard performing his official duties. This specific element distinguishes the charge from a standard assault claim.
The third charge centers on the location of the victim. The guard was standing at a place of public accommodation when Hernandez-Lira accelerated the vehicle. The car struck the door of the building where the security officer was positioned.
Hernandez-Lira, who also goes by the name Robert, was taken into custody this week and held at the Will County Jail. He has now regained his freedom after spending two days in the facility. Police records indicate he resides in the 200 block of Union Street in Joliet.
