Clark County voters have cast 6,520 ballots in the current election cycle. As of 4 p.m. on Thursday, this figure exceeds the total number of early votes recorded during the entire 2022 midterm election, which stood at 4,709.

The increase in participation has accelerated over the past week. In-person early voting began with 275 ballots cast on the first day. By Thursday, that daily count had climbed to 514. Clark County Clerk Ryan Lynch said the office is seeing double the numbers from previous collections. He attributed the surge to a combination of local, state, and national races on the ballot.

The Clerk's office also reported that 1,140 mail-in ballots have been returned. Another 400 ballots remain outstanding and are still being processed. These figures are part of the total early vote count that has outpaced prior midterms.

Voters standing in line at polling sites cited personal and political reasons for casting their ballots early. Karen McCain said she wanted to keep President Trump in office to ensure work gets done. Brooke Valentine-Thomas stated she was voting for her three children and their future. Paul Melson described the current social climate as volatile, adding that he had a long list of reasons to participate.

Political experts advise caution when interpreting high early turnout numbers. Paul Helmke, a former Fort Wayne mayor and current professor at the Indiana University O'Neill School of Public and Environmental Affairs, expressed skepticism about the trend. He noted that every election year brings reports of heavy early voting, but final turnout often remains lower than expected. Helmke explained that high early numbers frequently reflect changes in voting habits rather than a larger overall electorate.

Early voting is available in every Indiana county, with specific hours and locations varying by jurisdiction. Registered voters are directed to check their local county clerk's website for precise times and sites before visiting a polling place.
