The timing of DeepSeek's latest funding round is hard to ignore. Just forty-eight hours after the United States ordered federal civilian agencies to pull the company's AI technology from their systems due to security worries, the Hangzhou-based startup announced it had raised approximately $15 billion. That is roughly 100 billion yuan and stands as one of the largest funding rounds in China's history, according to reports from Bloomberg.

To understand how quickly the landscape has shifted, look at the last few months. In June, DeepSeek closed a round of more than $7 billion, valuing the company at $50 billion. By July, the startup was reportedly hunting for another $1.5 billion at a higher valuation of around $71 billion, with eyes set on a potential initial public offering in China as early as next year. Now, this new $15 billion injection arrives in the middle of growing friction with Washington.

The move signals that DeepSeek is not slowing down. Instead, the company is ramping up spending on AI infrastructure and open models aimed at both domestic and international markets. This aggressive expansion comes despite the fresh restrictions placed on the technology in the U.S. The strategy is clear: build a robust global presence while the regulatory environment remains volatile.

The new capital is expected to come from a heavy-hitting group of investors. Reports indicate that potential backers include CATL, a major Chinese battery manufacturer, and Tencent, the tech giant behind the WeChat messaging platform. Their participation underscores the broad appetite for AI growth among China's corporate leaders.

This funding surge is part of a larger trend. Investors around the world are pouring billions into AI companies to keep pace in the global race. In China specifically, the activity has been intense. Moonshot AI, the developer of the Kimi model, secured $2 billion at a $20 billion valuation in May. Earlier this month, Manus AI raised more than $500 million. Meanwhile, Zhipu AI and MiniMax, which both went public in Hong Kong in January, currently hold market capitalizations of roughly $29 billion and $7.2 billion, respectively.

DeepSeek was founded in 2023 by Liang Wenfeng, who previously co-founded the quantitative hedge fund High-Flyer. That fund helped bankroll DeepSeek's early days. The startup first made waves globally in early 2025 when it released a free-to-use, open-weight reasoning model. That release challenged the dominance of established U.S. AI players and put DeepSeek on the map. Corporate ownership data analyzed by WireScreen shows that Liang retains an estimated 81.6% stake in the company's Chinese operating entity following the earlier funding rounds.

The entry of DeepSeek into the global arena has intensified competition among domestic rivals in China. With more cash in the bank, the company is positioned to push further into infrastructure development. This could force other local players to accelerate their own spending and innovation to stay competitive. The market is watching closely to see if this new capital translates into tangible product advantages.

As the U.S. navigates its security concerns and China accelerates its AI ambitions, DeepSeek sits at the center of the storm. The company did not immediately respond to a request for comment regarding the new funding and its strategic implications. For now, the numbers speak for themselves, showing a company betting big on its future despite the geopolitical headwinds.
