Miami Heat fans can now see a face on the Dwyane Wade statue that matches the former player. The team revealed the updated head on Friday, replacing the original feature that drew widespread criticism for not looking like Wade.
The original statue stood outside the arena where the Heat play. It depicted Wade hopping onto a courtside table during a March 2009 game against the Chicago Bulls. That moment occurred in the final seconds of double overtime, a shot that helped secure the win. The sculpture captured the physical energy of that scene, but viewers noted the face did not resemble Wade. Wade described the original piece as an artistic interpretation of that specific night.
Criticism of the statue began immediately after its unveiling two years ago. Wade acknowledged that people did not feel a connection when looking at the face. In an essay published on Friday, he stated that he asked himself why the team would not try to make the piece better if viewers struggled to recognize him. He said the team engaged in honest conversations with everyone involved to determine the next steps.
Wade agreed to consent to a new head for the sculpture. The team worked on the replacement piece during the last few days. A plywood box covered the statue to hide the changes from the public. The Heat posted photos of the finished work on Friday, shortly before Wade’s essay became public online.
The former Hall of Famer said the change was not about erasing the previous work or disrespecting the artists who created it. He emphasized that the team was willing to listen and recognize that the statue carried meaning for more people than just him. Wade noted that the fans deserve to see themselves in that moment because their noise and belief contributed to the win.
Wade referred to Miami by its 305 area code and said the city deserves to feel the same energy at the statue as they did on that night in 2009. He expressed hope that people will see a better likeness of him in the updated version. More importantly, he wanted viewers to see themselves in the sculpture. He concluded that while it is his likeness, the house always belongs to the fans.
The statue remains outside the arena. The new head is now visible to the public. The body of the sculpture, which depicts Wade on the courtside table, remains unchanged from the original design.
