Roc Nation has produced the Super Bowl halftime show for every edition since 2019, a role that gives the company substantial influence over artist selection. Now, the NFL has confirmed that Jay-Z, whose real name is Shawn Carter, will take the stage in February.
Carter has not performed at the championship game before, and the announcement did not clarify whether he will be the sole headliner. The league noted in a statement that speculation regarding his guest performers would begin immediately, with his wife, Beyonce, expected to be a primary contender.
The news follows two concerts Carter held last weekend at the Los Angeles stadium scheduled to host Super Bowl LXI. Those shows were part of a tour marking the 30th anniversary of his debut album, Reasonable Doubt.
Carter described the milestone as the culmination of three decades of work. "From 'Reasonable Doubt' to standing on the Super Bowl halftime stage, this has been a journey," he said. "Thirty years of music, work, and culture on the world's biggest stage. This run continues to be a dream come true."
NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said he was excited for global audiences to see Carter's "artistry, creativity and cultural impact." Goodell recalled a specific request made when Roc Nation first agreed to produce the show in 2019.
"I had just one request: that Jay-Z take the stage himself one day, whenever the moment felt right to him," Goodell said. Super Bowl LXI is scheduled for 14 February near Los Angeles.
