Junior Caminero injured his left foot during the fourth World Series game on Tuesday but told reporters in St. Petersburg, Florida, that he will take the field for the fifth game on Wednesday. The Tampa Bay Rays beat the Milwaukee Brewers 4-3 in extra innings, surviving a late collapse by the visiting team to stay alive in the postseason.
Caminero began limping after he reached first base on an error by Milwaukee shortstop Joey Ortiz. The error opened the 12th inning and started a rally that allowed the Rays to score the winning runs. Caminero advanced to third base on a single by Liam Hicks before manager Kevin Cash sent him to the dugout. He was replaced by pinch runner Cedric Mullins.
The Dominican outfielder did not specify the extent of the injury, saying it mattered less than keeping Tampa Bay in the series. "If my foot is broken, I will play tomorrow," Caminero said.
Caminero, who is 23 years old, led the league with 42 home runs and 101 runs batted in during the regular season. He has hit one home run and driven in five runs in his 13 postseason games. The Rays are batting .195 in the World Series with just one home run. Cash said his team needs its best hitter in the lineup to extend the season.
"He will play tomorrow even if he is on one leg," Cash said. "I will make sure of it."
